Split the bill without the mental math

The oldest argument at the table: who owes what. The calculator above keeps it simple — it splits the total including tip evenly, which is the fairest default when everyone ordered similarly. For uneven orders, split the food separately and use the calculator just for the tip: enter the group's food total, choose the percentage, and divide the tip line across phones.

Two habits that save arguments: agree on the percentage before the bill arrives, and put one card in the middle rather than running five — splitting one payment is faster everywhere, from diners to delivery apps.

Restaurant & delivery tipping

Sit-down restaurants: 15–20% of the pre-tax bill in the US. Counter service and cafés: the jar is optional; rounding up or $1–2 is plenty. Food delivery (DoorDash, Uber Eats, and the like): drivers see the tip before they accept an order, so 10–15% or at least $3–5 keeps your food from sitting. Bartenders: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab.

Hair salon, braids & tattoo tips

Personal services run on tips: 15–20% for a haircut or color at a salon (a bit more if the owner herself did the work is a myth — owners can be tipped too). Braids, weaves and locs are hours of skilled labor: 10–20% is the norm, and many stylists post a preferred range. Tattoos and piercings: 15–25%, cash preferred, non-negotiable etiquette in most shops.

Uber & taxi

Rideshare apps bake tipping in — 15–20% of the fare for a normal ride, a couple of dollars for short hops, and more if the driver handled luggage or a pet. Taxis: the same range; add a dollar or two for heavy bags, and round up to keep the change moving.

Tip FAQ

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service — 18% is a safe default. Tip 20% or more for excellent service, and 10% for noticeably poor service rather than nothing, since tips often make up most of a server's pay.

How do I split the bill and tip between people?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide the total by the number of people. This calculator does exactly that: enter the bill, the tip percentage and the headcount, and the per-person number already includes the tip. Round-up mode is handy when paying cash.

Do you tip on the tax?

Technically no — tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the convention. In practice the difference on a typical bill is small, so many people simply tip on the total. If you want to be exact, subtract the tax line from the bill before entering it above.

Is this tip calculator free? Do you store my numbers?

It is completely free and runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere — reload the page and everything is gone.
